5 Ways to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

Catalytic converter theft has become a widespread problem in recent years, and it's causing a lot of problems for vehicle owners and law enforcement. One of the biggest issues is the cost of replacing a stolen catalytic converter. Depending on the make and model of your car, truck, bus or van, a replacement converter can cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. 1.  Park your car, truck, bus or van in a secure location: Catalytic converter thieves often target vehicles parked in isolated areas or dark corners. To prevent theft, park in well-lit areas or a garage with a closed door, if possible.

2. Install a catalytic converter lock: Catalytic converter locks prevent thieves from easily removing the catalytic converter from your vehicle. These locks are made of heavy-duty steel, making it difficult for thieves to steal the converter.  CatClamp, CatStraps, and other locks can make potential thieves pass right on by.  

3. Use a security camera: Installing a security camera in your parking area can help deter thieves, and if a theft does occur, you'll have footage that may help the police catch the culprit.

4.  Etch your license plate number on the converter: Engraving your license plate number on your catalytic converter makes it easier for law enforcement to identify the stolen converter and return it to you.

5. Consider installing an alarm system: An alarm system that detects motion around your vehicle can alert you and scare off thieves when they attempt to steal your converter. Some systems even have a feature that will trigger the car horn or send you an alert on your phone if the alarm goes off.
